STARK / The app
A workout app that logs your sessions and shows your progress
STARK is a strength training app for iPhone and Apple Watch. It logs every set in a few seconds, tells you what to lift next time and shows what is getting stronger, without ads.
Updated October 30, 2026 · Written by the STARK team. We make STARK, so we say it upfront.
Short answer: a good workout app does three things: it logs each set quickly, tells you what to do next session and shows what is progressing. STARK does all three on iPhone and Apple Watch, with 1,394 exercises, 30+ ready-to-follow programs and its core features free, with no ads.
What is a workout app for?
Muscle and strength come from progressive overload: a little more weight or one more rep than last time. Doing that from memory rarely works past a few weeks. A workout app replaces the paper log and does the arithmetic for you.
- Log: weight, reps and rest for every set, in a few taps between two efforts.
- Plan: know which session comes next and which load to aim for.
- Measure: see your volume, records and estimated 1RM move week after week.
More on the method in our guide to progressive overload.
During the session: STARK does the thinking
- Last weights in view on every set, so you know what to beat.
- Next load suggested from your previous sessions.
- Warm-up sets suggested before your first heavy sets, and plates calculated for each side of the bar.
- Rest timer on iPhone and Apple Watch, with an alert when it is time to go again.
- Supersets, drop sets and HIIT, WOD or AMRAP sessions.

After the session: see what is progressing
- Volume, records and estimated 1RM for each exercise, with the full history kept for free.
- Weekly muscle review: which muscle groups you trained this week and which still need work.
- Body weight and progress photos, free.
- Apple Health two-way sync and a friends feed to follow and encourage each other.

How to choose a workout app
Five questions sort most apps in a minute, before you install anything:
- What does the free version really include? Some apps are a trial, others cap your history or your routines.
- How fast is logging? If noting a set takes more than a few taps, you will stop doing it.
- Are there programs? When you are starting out, a structured plan beats an empty log.
- Does it show progress clearly? Records, volume and estimated 1RM per exercise.
- Does it fit your phone and watch? iPhone or Android, Apple Watch or not.
We applied these criteria to seven apps in our comparison of the best workout apps.
Who is STARK for?
- You are starting out: pick one of the beginner programs and follow the session of the day; every exercise has a video and form cues.
- You already have your routine: rebuild it in a minute and log it; STARK keeps your loads and suggests the next one.
- You train with an Apple Watch: log your sets and follow your rest from the wrist.
- You are on Android: STARK is not available yet; see the alternatives in our comparison.
