Seven gym apps compared on what actually matters: what the free version really includes, the price of the paid plan, Apple Watch support and the type of lifter each one suits.

How we compared them

Our picks, app by app

1. STARK

Best for: Logging your sets fast, with ready-made programs.

Built around the gym session itself: your last weights are right there, the rest timer is one tap away, and the weekly muscle review shows what still needs work. It ships with 1,394 exercises, 30+ programs (PPL, upper/lower, full body, 5×5…), estimated 1RM tracking, Apple Health sync and set logging from the Apple Watch. The trade-off: it is iPhone-only for now.

2. Hevy

Best for: Social features and a large community.

The most popular logger in most rankings, with a social feed where you follow friends and copy their workouts. The free plan caps routines and custom exercises and keeps a limited stats history; Hevy Pro removes the caps.

3. Strong

Best for: A minimalist, proven log.

A long-standing, no-frills tracker: templates, records, rest timer and an Apple Watch app. The free version saves unlimited workouts but only three routines; Strong PRO unlocks the rest.

4. Fitbod

Best for: Letting the app generate every workout.

Fitbod builds each session for you from your equipment, history and muscle recovery. Useful if you never want to plan, less so if you already follow a program. It is the most expensive option here.

5. Jefit

Best for: A huge exercise database and community plans.

One of the oldest apps, with over 1,400 exercises and many community-shared routines. The free version shows ads; Elite removes them and adds expert plans and advanced tracking.

6. Epilog

Best for: A French log with tempo and circuit tracking.

A recent French workout log: sets with weight, reps, tempo and rest, circuits, HIIT and AMRAP, muscle-group charts and body measurements. The free plan keeps only the last 21 days of history and four session templates. Full STARK vs Epilog comparison.

7. SP Training

Best for: A personalised program in French.

A French app that builds a program from your constraints and goals, with a training log, a timer and 250+ exercises with video.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free workout app?

If you want a free app with no ads, STARK covers logging, programs and Apple Watch on iPhone without a subscription for the core features. Hevy and Strong have usable free plans but limit how many routines you can save; Jefit is free with ads.

Which workout app works best with Apple Watch?

STARK, Hevy, Strong and Fitbod all offer an Apple Watch app. STARK lets you log sets and follow rest timers from the watch.

Do I need an app to make progress at the gym?

No, but you need a log. Progress comes from adding a rep or a little weight over time, and that is hard to manage from memory. An app makes the comparison with your last session instant.

Is STARK available on Android?

Not yet. STARK is available on iPhone, with Apple Watch support.
